December Last Blast - Report
A warm day greeted the first Daylight Savings day, with only one person caught out turning up late. As always, we enjoyed seeing an excellent variety of cars competing this month spanning a trio of 1940s MGs through to current models. And again we had some unusual cars among the entries. Keith Smith's modified Renault 12 sedan was certainly an unusual car to see in a competition event.
With his Elise still recovering form an accident some months ago (at another motor sport venue), Norbert Pelzer pulled his old MR2 out from hibernation and gave it a blast. And Bill Thomson told us this would be the last time he'd be driving the Lancer - his Falcon GT being almost ready.
We had a slightly different course, from past events, which most people took to well. John Fleay and Adam Johnson both drove exceptionally well for the top spot, with a cone knocking Adam out of contention on his final run. We've come to expect Simon Lingford to be near the top too. Well done also to Rami Brass to bring his MGB home in 7th place outroght.
Spin of the day was achieved by Vince Troth, who instead of using the Renault 8 Gordini he usually competes in, was trying out his new HSV Clubsport. A bit too much right foot, with the traction control saw the car spin, resulting in the usually pristine clean car covered with dust and the interior filled with grass and dirt.
Results are shown below.
Congratulations to all for a day well driven.

October 8 - Report
A feature of the event in October was the strong representation from the BMW Car Club, with an interesting mix of BMW models spanning 2002 to the latest V10-engined M5. We had full fields in both the morning and afternoon sessions, with an interesting mix of cars. From several 1940s MG TCs through to the high tech new cars, all participants reportedly enjoyed the day's event (other than the couple who suffered breakdowns).
As always, the times make interesting reading. There were some excellent performances, of course, and some drivers showed great consistency. It's not always the case, but this time the all-wheel-drive cars dominated the top positions, but with only a total of 11 seconds (combined 4 runs) between the top 4WD and top 2WD car.
Well done to the outright winner, Jamie Lister in his always quick WRX, who was the only person to break into the 62 second mark, which he achieved twice. Outside the top few places, the performances by Simon Lingford, Piotr Zmigrodzki, Dave Eustace and Jurgen Lunsmann all stand out.
Results appear below, with a list of entries by category under that. Congratulations to all category winners.
Our thanks to all the officials who helped out on the day.

September 3 - Report
Fabulous spring weather helped make the recent Fathers’ Day Superkhana held at the Speed Dome in Midvale a very successful day.
As usual, a great variety of cars were in the mix for the road-circuit style event. Oldest cars included a 1965 MGB Roadster and a Renault 8 Gordini of the same year. Other classic models included Cortina Mk 2, Escort, 1975 Lancer Datsun 240Z and a very rapid Mazda RX3.
Other rare cars competing included a Renault Sport Spider, a lightweight 2-seater sports model of which there is only five examples in Australia. A 1987 BMW E30 M3 proved how these rare racing homologation models still have what it takes.
Regular competitor John Dunkley’s powerful (and always spectacularly driven) XD Falcon was joined by first-timers husband and wife team Shane and Samantha Sager in a Falcon XF.
The 4WD Turbo Class was well represented, with a good mix of models this time.
The day ran very smoothly, with no hiccups, starting each of the competitive runs slightly ahead of schedule. After a very close tussle, ultimately two of the 4WD Turbo cars fought it out for top place honours, with Blaise Paris in his Mitsubishi Evo4 nudging out Jamie Lister’s Subaru WRX to win.
Both Renaults reached the limit of adhesion, with spins resulting and most spectacular was Paul Stagno’s spin just before the finish line in his BMW 328 Coupe – which saw him entering the garage backwards amid cheers from the spectator crowd.
In third place, and beating seven 4WD Turbo cars, was John Fleay piloting his 1973 Mazda RX3 Turbo to a very impressive third place. Simon Lingford managed to mix it with the modern all-wheel-drive cars in his 240Z as well.
Congratulations to all the class winners. They will be advised when trophies are available. Results are shown below.

August 6th - Report
The weather forecast had been for thunderstorms, downgraded to showers - increasing. So it was with some trepidation that 51 cars lined up for their runs at the excellent Speed Dome facility in Midvale on Sunday.
As it turned out, there was a light shower in the morning, followed by some drizzle, and then the day cleared - the sun even popped out from behind the clouds a few times. For some cars in the morning session, their results were skewed by driving in the rain, but overall there was a very high level of skill showed by all drivers - even the novices. There were no casualties as a result of the wet roads, and some excellent exhibitions of car control.
The damp conditions favoured the all-wheel-drive cars as you'd expect.
Many drivers of the 2-wheel-drive cars showed exceptional skill and confidence, really driving their cars accurately and fast. Well done to Jarrod Ferrari for achieving the top-placed 2-wheel drive car on the day.
A couple of the officials mentioned that they were getting a workout running after dislodged cones. Simon Lingford, normally a paragon of fast and accurate driving, managed to drag a witches hat around three quarters of the circuit underneath his 240Z before depositing it.
And Vince Troth must have had the front wheels of his Renault 8 Gordini lift off the ground with the number of witches hats stuck underneath it on his last run!
It was great to see a number of first timers having a go, all of whom showed restraint and a mature keen-ness to learn the course and how their cars handled it.
And as always, we had an excellent variety of cars, spanning a pair of 1940s MG TCs to the latest high tech turbocharged all wheel drive cars. There was a strong showing of MGBs and a very attractive MGC entered. Rod Randall's rare Renault Sport Spider attracted a lot of attention, as did Paul Bevis' genuine Fiat 124 Abarth.
And it was great to see classics like the Isuzu Bellett of Robert Buys, the Cortina Mk1 of George Kalogirou, Neil Grant's 1971 Porsche 911T and a pair of very nicely presented Triumph TR6s.
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo numbers are growing, equalling the representation of WRXs competing this time. Lance Carwardine's lovely Lancia Integrale is a potent machine too. The photos in our Gallery page show some of the broad variety of cars in action.
Congratulations to the class winners, and to outright winner Jamie Lister, back in action after a few months hiatus.

JULY 2 - Closed Club event
Sunday July 2 was a closed club event, run in the morning for the Porsche Club, and the afternoon for the HSV Club. Some additional entries were taken for the morning session, to make up numbers. Results from this day do not count towards the Biante Trevor Young Championship. Fortunately the weather was beautiful, there were very few Wrong Ways and no breakdowns. A full set of results for all participants is shown below.

JUNE 4th
Beautiful weather blessed the June long weekend Autokhana held at the Speed Dome in Midvale. The event was planned for the morning only and had a full field of 35 cars entered.
A new open, flowing course was used on the day, with 4 runs per car. Feedback on the new layout from competitors was very positive.
As you can see from the list of entries, we saw an excellent mix of makes and models competing on the day. Of note were Paul Bevis' newly acquired Fiat 124 Abarth, one of just four examples in Australia and Ben Johnson's new model Mazda MX5. Oldest car entered is the 1965 MGB Roadster of Rami Brass.
The only real problem experienced during the event was when Simon Lingford's London-Sydney Marathon Datsun 240Z broke a half shaft just after leaving the start garage on his third run. There were a couple of good spins on the day, but Bill Thomson's effort in the borrowed 1975 Lancer rally car was only outshone by John Dunkley's pirouette in the big black Falcon. At least they both stayed on the bitumen...
Regular competitor Steve Pummer made a rare mistake, going through the garage finish, gaining a 10 second penalty, which cost him second place outright in his new 2.5 litre WRX STi.
A newcomer to the Speed Dome Superkhanas, Steven Jones showed exemplary driving style in his Mitsubishi Evo8 to come out ahead of everyone else at the end of the day. His times also showed great consistency. Well done to Steven for a well deserved win.
Graeme Martin did very well getting his Lotus Elise into second place among the gaggle of 4WD and turbo cars at the top of the results sheet. And Eoin Douglas-Smith deserves a mention for hustling his big Falcon XR8 around sufficiently well to achieve 7th place outright.
Congratulations to all the class winners.

FEBRUARY 5th
Our first Superkhana Day of the year was a successful event, in quite warm weather, but a breeze made it all the more tolerable. Following our experiment with a single course layout in December last year, we ran the same format of one course, four runs per car, which was again very well received by participants.
Dramas were few, with two cars giving in to drivetrain problems. Also, Greg Eastwood's very hot MG TC found the going too hot, blowing the lower radiator hose. Spin of the Day - Norbert Pelzer in the green Elise.
We had far more than the usual number of garage penalties, especially in the morning session. Nobody made any wrong way runs, and the revised course layout was widely enjoyed.
Of course, there was some excellent driving seen throughout the day. Congratulations to all the class winners - places well deserved. Although not class winners, Eoin Douglas-Smith in his big BA Falcon and David Brittain (BMW 325) showed exceptional skill, noted by several people present.
Results and a selection of photos from the day are shown below.
See below, after the results tables for details of last year's Speed Dome Superkhanas.

THE LAST BLAST FOR 2005...
![]()
![]()
Having been persuaded to run one last Superkhana Day at the Speed Dome for 2005, we had an excellent day with a new format on December 18th. Instead of one run at several courses, there was only one, long course on the day, which competitors had four runs at. The course was a revised version of one of the favourite courses we've been running for a while - a little bit spiced-up.
Entries filled in record time, with a nice variety of cars competing. As always, this event attracted a real mi x of old and new, exotic and unusual cars among the entries. There aren't too many events in Australia where a 1948 MG TC competes with a brand new Mitsubishi Evo9! We had seventeen different marques competing, with the most popular brand being Triumph and Nissan with equal numbers, with BMW and Subaru just behind.
After a long time coming, summer weather hit with a vengeance, with the first properly hot day of the year...
There was some outstanding driving, with many drivers receiving a cheer and applause as they finished their runs. Perhaps most notable was Rami Brass in his MGB in the morning session, who approached the finish garage just a bit too hot, and the car oversteered from one side to the other, stopping on a radical angle, but just within the garage boundaries.
On his first run Murray Armenti had two spectacular excursions onto the grass - and afterwards seemed quite concerned about what description might appear on this website - so I'll leave it to quote Murray's email the following day:
"Thank you for a well run event yesterday.
Following are the stories I'm sticking to.
Excuse 1- Experimenting with 4wd MR2 idea. (I would like to thank the gardener/landscaper
for making enough gap between the two trees on my first excursion).
Excuse 2- Spectator satisfaction (hasn't anyone invented rubber curbs).
Excuse 3- Needing to maintain my 100% record for rotational ballet at Speed Dome.
Excuse 4- Spectator satisfaction.
Excuse 5- Don't leave toolboxes & other bits in boot while racing (excuse 8).
Excuse 6- Spectator satisfaction.
Excuse 7- The second excursion was to guarantee a mention on your famous "overview" of the event. Excuse 8- Spectator satisfaction.
Excuse 9- Having tried to break the MR2 on 2 occasions I have come to the conclusion shared by the main public that "Toyota's don't break." Sad but true.
Have a safe xmas.
Cheers,
"Balls Tied Under the Drivers Seat" Murray
P.S. Is there a trophy for trying the hardest to give everyone else a chance (excuse 10)?"Jamie Lister was a pleasure to watch, as always, putting in some blistering times in his WRX. He was the only driver to break into the 65 second range, which he achieved twice. His performance gained him top place on the day. Congratulations.
It was good to see Barry Baltinas bring out his BMW 2002 and take it into second place, with an extremely consistent performance. In fact, of all the drivers, Barry's four times were the closest, with just 0.48 seconds separating his slowest and fastest times. Visiting the event from San Francisco was Hayden Burvill, who had built the BMW many years ago.
Other very consistent drivers on the day were: Duane Joubert (Toyota Sprinter): 0.55 seconds variation, Peter Randell (Honda S2000): 0.61 seconds variation, Norbert Pelzer (Lotus Elise): 0.69 seconds variation and Chris Caruso (Jaguar XJC): 0.7 seconds variation.
It was good to see eight different makes of car among the top ten, with cars ranging from 1970 to 2004.
Special thanks to our team of volunteers, especially to Gerry, Carol and Candy, the Scrutineering team, for a job well done on a sweltering day.

Sunday, October 23rd
Another excellent day was held on October 23rd at the Speed Dome. With rain in Perth the day before and after, we were lucky in having a lovely, warm 26 degree day. A field of 44 cars spanned 1965 to new, with the usual good mix of makes and models.
There was some very competitive driving - impressive to watch. It was great to see that Chris Caruso has got his Jaguar XJC by the scruff of the neck now, and posted some excellent times, eventually coming third outright. John Fowler and Adam Plummer performed extremely well in their almost matching Porsche 911 Targas. Ivor Cohen will be pleased he can still beat his son Jason, even if by the narrowest of margins!
Most spectacular drive? Without doubt Craig McLennan's backwards spin into the finish garage, sending the electronic timing gear flying "They told me to break the electronic beam" he later said...
Well done to all the category winners too (see below). And a special thanks to all our Officials on the day.

Speed Dome SUPERKHANA - Sunday, September 4
Last Sunday saw the last running for the year of the Speed Dome Superkhana at the excellent Midvale facility. As always, the event saw a broad range of cars competing, spanning Vince Troth’s classic 1965 Renault 8 Gordini through to the latest model Subaru Impreza WRX STi. Most popular makes were Ford, with examples of Cortina GT, Escort, Falcon and a Capri V8, Mitsubishi with a Cordia Turbo and three different models of Lancers from a 1991 GSR to an Evo7, and six Subarus.
Competition was fierce, with results extremely close in some categories. In fact second and third places were separated by the narrowest possible margin – 1 100th of a second. Other than the obvious winners, some great drives were seen. Mal Kleinman seems to have come to grips with the huge power of his V8 Capri, ultimately gaining 4th place in the day, and a class win. Jeff Watts did well in his newly purchased Evo7, straight out of the box and Barbara Dellow put in a sound result, coming 8th in her 2-wheel drive Nissan Skyline. Bill Thomson impressed with a very solid performance and excellent result with his Escort RS2000, well ahead of many more powerful and newer cars.
There were a few dramas in the day. Chris Caruso has not yet sorted all the teething problems with his recently completed V8 Jaguar XJC and a faulty diff saw his car spear off the track before finishing his day when the fuel tank was damaged. Jarrod Ferrari’s newly acquired Mazda MX5 suffered a suspension problem which sidelined the car after the second event.
Outright winner was Rod Willis driving his supercharged Mazda MX5, with second place getter Les Eather’s Westfield SEi very close behind. Congratulations to all the winners.
A special thanks to all the marshals and officials who assisted on the day - Ian Mann, Andy Hamilton, Tim Fowler, Colin Bonney, Noelene Dorn, Peter Hodgson, Frank Ferrari, Ernest Williams, Martin McCoy and George Noble.

July 17th Speed Dome Superkhana Report
![]()
We had a full field of entries, including an excellent cross-section of makes and models on July 17th. Always a risky time weather-wise, the cold and very foggy morning turned into a lovely, clear winter's day, the sun warming us all nicely.
The morning group had a slightly smaller number of cars than the afternoon, with notable cars among them including three MGBs, Cos Sorgiovanni's spectacular twin-turbo GT40, a very tasty Lancia Delta Integrale and a pair of powerful V8 Capris. John Fleay's beautifully presented orange Mazda RX4 and David Moir's just-arrived-from-Sydney Datsun 260Z attracted their fair share of attention too. Seven Fords were among the morning entries.
Performances of note in the morning session included Kevin Clifton's first time out in his Porsche GT3, Morgan Oliver's sideways action in his turbocharged Escort and Les Eather's driving in his Westfield - his first event back in WA since the 1992 Classic Rally.
There were few dramas in the morning session, but Julie Cooper's drive in the Fiat X1-9 was shortened by a kerb taking off the front spoiler and putting the alignment out, while Ron Fabry's very well presented MGB Roadster blew a core plug out, allowing the coolant complete freedom to roam the Speed Dome.
Wayne Curtis, guest driving the Evo 5 rally car of Mike Civil took an excursion the very long way beyond the last corner of one course, reappearing on the bitumen after the finish garage.
The afternoon session saw only Paul Trettel's Fiat 124 Sport having problems, overheating in the line-up area when the fan didn't cut in.
Doug Tostevin's first run in his Legacy RS Turbo was somewhat of a lawn-mowing exercise, but he got the handling tamed for subsequent courses.
As it turned out, the fastest competitors were in the afternoon session.
Again, we had a big variety of cars competing, as is the tradition at this great venue. They spanned Vince Troth's tough little Renault 8 Gordini, through to Lotuses, Porsches and Chris Caruso's impressive V8 engined Jaguar XJC. In fact ten Porsches competed in the afternoon session, making it the most populous marque. Eight Subarus competed.
Impressive drives were put in by several drivers - as the results show. Congratulations to all who performed well.
Particular thanks also to the officials on the day - Martin McCoy, George Noble, Ian Mann, Brock Mann, Ernest Williams, Tim Fowler, Frank Ferrari, Andy Hamilton, Colin Bonney and Gerry Iwaskiw, plus those who assisted in minor capacities throughout the day.
At the end of the day the top placings and class winners were:

Sunday, March 13th - Event report
This was the first chance in the year to have a drive at the fabulous mini-circuit style facility, the Speed Dome in Midvale. It is a venue well suited to first timers, but challenging for the experts.
A series of five different courses were run, each with their own challenges, including new layouts. As you can see from the results, there were many categories, based on car age and engine size.Spectators and fellow competitors saw some excellent action, with some very skilled driving performed. Congratulations to Jamie Lister in his WRX, who for the first time anyone at this venue, achieved fastest time on every course. Good to see relative newcomer Lance Carwardine put his exquisite Lancia Integrale into second place outright. First of the 2-wheel drives was Andy Hamilton in his faithful Triumph TR8. Full results below.
Thanks also to all the officials who assisted throughout the event.
Photos from the day are available on line now www.digitalshutterspeed.com
