2008 Superkhana Reports, Results & Photos

December 7 - Last Blast Superkhana

Perfect weather and a great course layout were hallmarks of the Last Blast Superkhana for 2008. As always we had a wonderful variety of cars entered, from an AMG Mercedes-Benz SLK to a classic Ford Escort rally car. Several newcomers participated, and nobody damaged a car or suffered a mechanical breakdown.

Congratulations to our most winning driver ever, Franz Esterbauer who took out first place again, followed by Superkhana first-timers Chris Kostopoulos and Van Ty Lam who both drove the same potent Subaru. Gary Thorn should be pleased to have lead the 2-wheel drive cars in with an outstanding performance in his Birkin S3.

There was some spectacular driving, as we've come to expect, though some was not exactly as the drivers intended...

There's a full calendar of Superkhanas planned for next year, and we thank all officials and participants for their support during 2008.

October 19 - Results, report & photos

On Perth's warmest day yet since winter we saw two full fields of cars competing at our Speed Dome venue. The morning session was run for the MG Car Club, who invited the Triumph Sports Owners Association to join the fun. The mix of cars was interesting, even with so many red MGBs among them. Dave Eustace's turbocharged Midget had competed at this venue a few times before, and showed the prowess of a race prepared car, putting down times considerably quicker than any other cars in the morning. Interestingly his last two times were exactly the same.

A TSOA member took second place, Trevor Allen driving his V8-engined TR7 very effectively. Regular Superkhana competitor Rami Brass took third place in his B roadster. His daughter Jessica took to the track for the first time since getting her P-plates, and put in quite respectable runs. It was good to see a few female competitors.

Also of note was that the two MG Cs managed to score so closely. Most drivers improved with each run. The club adjourned to the grass behind the Speed Dome for a barbeque afterwards, and by all accounts everyone enjoyed the event.  Thanks to Ron Fabry for making the arrangements. The afternoon session was open to all comers, and as usual, we had a real mix of cars. Seventeen brands were represented. There was plenty of spirited driving, and for once, some of the favourites made small errors, opening up the possibilities for others to score well. Congratulations to Ben Maziarz for his win, and to Grant Stephenson for putting his 2-wheel-drive Mazda RX7 Turbo up into second place. Grant's driving was very committed and impressive to watch.

Kim Illman is usually seen behind the wheel of a Porsche Turbo, and he'd be pleased with his result in his Mitsubishi Evo. And Rod Willis's supercharged Mazda MX5 just seems to get quicker...

Spin of the Day went to Birkin S3 driver Jeff Docking, who mounted the embankment - no damage done. We certainly saw some impressive driving and it's quite clear that the skill and level of driver ability is forever improving.

September 21 Superkhana - Results, report and photos

The Superkhanas seem to be becoming a Mitsubishi Evo-fest!  Where are the WRX drivers?  Yes, we know some of them have defected - and even Chris Ince, dedicated Nissan driver for decades now has an Evo... Well done to all the Evo drivers - seven of the top eight places!  Well done to Bruce Hawley in his recently purchased Skyline for taking 6th place. And a remarkable performance in his 1.4-litre turbo VW Golf from Martin Grant. These are greatly underestimated models, but clearly, driven well they have what it takes.

Perhaps the weather can be thanked for the all-wheel-drive car domination. Just as the last few cars were about to do their first run, the heavens opened and a deluge of rain came down. Only for the last run was the track starting to dry out. We had a few spins, but no real dramas.

Even with a brief spin, Neil Richardson drove his Suzuki Swift to a good result, as we've grown to expect. And Darren Wiese has now beaten Rod Willis in the same supercharged MX5. Maybe Darren will have to drive his Torana in future...

August 31 Superkhana - Report, Photos & Results

We had a full field of participants in our August Superkhana, with the usual excellent variety of cars competing - 22 different brands were represented. The threat of wet weather never eventuated much to the pleasure of competitors, spectators and officials.

Again we saw a clean sweep of the first three places going to Mitsubishi Evos - all exceptionally well driven. Congratulations to Franz Esterbauer for his stellar performances. Results also worthy of note are the performances by Mazda drivers Rod Willis and Glen Scotter (4th and 6th places) and Craig Strong and Jurgen Lunsmann in their polar cars - a 7-litre Cobra replica and a 1.3-litre Suzuki Swift GTi - in 7th and 8th places respectively.

As usual we had several first-time competitors on the day - most of whom thanked officials, stating they'd be back again.

July 6 Superkhana - results

A huge field of entries, quite unexpected by the organizers, turned up to a cold but dry start after two weeks of rain. The mid-winter Superkhana turned out to be on a lovely sunny day, which was just as well as the big field meant some waiting. During the wait there was plenty to entertain with some spectacularly good driving as well as plenty of mistakes. An unprecedented number of competitors made Garage errors during the day. Perhaps it was the low temperature (it had got down to 0.7 degrees the night before) and tyres weren't warming up enough... Wet areas in the surrounding grass meant that two errant cars had to be towed out - something which has never happened before at the Speed Dome.

There was a vast range of cars among the vehicles entered - apart from the excellent array of Porsches.

Franz Esterbauer turned in some especially impressive times, taking first place. If not for a spin, Simon Lingford would have been in second place, but Rod Willis impressed all present in his supercharged MX5 taking it into second place. A serious attempt by Chris Caruso in the big V8 Jaguar saw none of the wheelspinning, tail-sliding antics many are used to, which took him into third place. Well done all.

Other drives of note included Craig Strong driving his 7-litre Cobra into 11th place outright. While it has plenty of mumbo, these cars are notoriously hard to drive in anything other than a straight line. Cade Bell's driving of the white Porsche 911 was also great to watch.

March Superkhana Report, Results & Photos

Warm weather greeted participants in our March Superkhana. We probably had a broader mix of makes and models of cars entered than we've seen for a long time, with twenty brands represented. Most populous were MGS with models spanning Midget to 6-cylinder MGC. Cars not seen before at the Speed Dome included an Alpine A310 V6 and a newly finished 550bhp HQ Monaro. As usual, we had several first-timers here, including 18 year old Kyle Makin making his competition debut in a Mk1 Escort.

The course used was the same as the last time, and one which was universally enjoyed.

Congratulations to Franz Esterbaur who put in a blisteringly quick time of 45.19, the best yet on this circuit. Franz went on to win the day. Craig Strong's performance in his RMC Cobra is noteworthy. These cars are notoriously difficult to drive quickly in anything other than a straight line. Cleary Craig has his car very well sorted and has mastered the art of Cobra driving, achieving 5th place outright.

It's good to see nine different marques in the top twelve places.

We only had a small number of entries in the afternoon session, so each took the chance to have a fifth run, which although timed, did not count in the results.

All Italian Car Superkhana - February 17 - Results, report & photos

As an adjunct to the All Italian Car Day display the following weekend AEM ran a charity fund-raising Superkhana which was open to Italian cars only. Entries included examples of Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Maserati and Ferrari - an excellent mix in anyone's terms.  The event ran exceptionally well, which allowed sufficient time for five timed runs per car. The Fiat Lancia Club used the event as the first in their club championship for the year.

There was some brilliant driving, with many observers commenting that outright winner Simon Lingford's work behind the wheel of his Ferrari 328 was pleasure to watch.

Looking closely at the results, the scores achieved by the two drivers of the Fiat 128, Dan Zorde and David Hey, couldn't have been much closer! One of the most consistent drivers was Vince Troth in his well-driven Fiat 131.

As a part of the fund-raising activities AEM donated a model Ferrari for raffle. Including the proceeds from the raffle, AEM will be very pleased to present a cheque for $1825 to Northbridge Rotary - for their funds to assist the RUAH Centre for homeless people.  Many thanks to all involved. The event was successful enough to be set in the calendar again for next year.

The trophy for the inaugural All Italian Car Superkhana will be presented at the All Italian Car Day display - February 24th at Technology Park, Bentley.

FEBRUARY 3 - Results, report & photos

We had a very full field of entries for our first Superkhana for the year, and an amazing variety of cars among the entries as you can see from the results chart.  Congratulations to Simon Lingford for his outright win in his ex-London-Sydney Marathon Datsun 240Z.

Well done also to Denis Conway who achieved his best-ever result at the Speed Dome. Other impressive placings were achieved by Craig Strong in his Cobra (10th), Eoin Douglas-Smith driving his powerful FPV GT-P Falcon (12th) and Neil Richardson's impressive 14th outright in his virtually standard Suzuki Swift.

An error took first place away from Vito Forte in his brilliantly driven BMW M3 - he would have been an impressive 3 seconds ahead of Simon Lingford. Richard Humphries achieved fastest time of 46.87, being one of two people to break the 7 second mark on the new course.  Also Glenn Scotter's RX7 Turbo would have been in second place were it not for an error.

Spinner of the day was Chris Caruso, on his first run - in fact quite a lot of people needed warming up after the Christmas break in motorsport. The majority of people's first runs were considerably slower than subsequent times they achieved. Andrew Brown was a notable exception, getting 50.31 seconds on both his first two runs...

As the day heated up some drivers' concentration lapsed and a number of people gained worse times on the last run. Nevertheless, general comments about the new course layout were extremely positive.

We had a significant number of first-timers, and their feedback at the end of the day was also very good. Thanks to the team of officials who helped out under pressure of a very full field and hot weather.
