2007 Superkhanas - Reports, Results & Photos

December 2 - Last Blast Superkhana

We had a great turnout for our Last Blast Superkhana, with as usual, many competitors and spectators commenting favourably on the variety amongst the cars entered. It's not often you can see a 1967 Camaro pitted against a new Porsche Turbo or by similarity, an MGB taking on a TR4 and an E-Type.  Early wet weather had been predicted, but didn't eventuate.

We had an unusually high number of breakdowns, nothing serious luckily...

First time at the venue, Franz Esterbaur understandably loved the course, and put in some stormingly good drives, achieving fastest time of the day and overall victory in his Evo8. Well done. And with so many well driven cars, it is interesting to look at the mix of 4 and 2 wheel drive cars, powerful and not so powerful cars among the top results.

It was also good to see some of the first timers improving so well throughout the day. And John Donohoe, normally driving a big HSV was behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi Evo for the first time - his times improved rapidly as he came to grips with a new type of car.

Jason Cohen showed that you don't need a turbo to be able to master the art of drifting - his BMWs tyres being given a beating on Jason's accurately driven runs. The times weren't quick, but he kept it on the bitumen and only spun on is last run. Meantime, his father Ivor cruised around in his newly acquired, impressive Camaro 454 convertible.

Scott Allen brought his third vehicle in three Superkhanas, proving his rally Charade had the goods to give him quicker times than the Alfa GTV or Audi S3 he'd used previously...

Special thanks to all our officials and helpers on the day and throughout the year. Without the help and dedication of the team, the Superkhanas could not run as smoothly as they do.

Our Presentation Night for the Trevor Young Biante Championship will take place in February - details will be advised. Awards for winners of 2007 Superkhanas will be presented on the same evening.

October 7 - Report

A full field of entries marked October's Superkhana - boosted by the Porsche Club being among the afternoon session. Lovely sunny weather combined well with the new course layout to make a most enjoyable day.  Comments about the course were very positive.

Among the wide variety of cars entered were several being driven by drivers new to the Superkhana.

Several cars had multiple drivers - notably the Trettel Evo8, with father and three sons using the car during the day - and to very good effect too. A look at the results tells that without the penalties that John and Laurie Trettel accrued, the Trettel family would have placed 2nd, 3rd, 4th an 5th place.

John Fowler drove well in an unfamiliar car and Grant Stephenson's result is more impressive considering his 'off' on his first run. Vince Troth's Fiat also performed well, his result being higher in the field that many might rate the rear wheel drive older style 2-litre car.

But hats off to Brad Kidd who drove consistently, smoothly and very quickly first time at the Speed Dome in his recently acquired Porsche GT3 to achieve the top place. Brad was also the only driver to break the 52 second mark - in his final run. Well done.

Congratulations also to all the class winners. Thanks too to our team of officials - Ian, Brock, Martin, Andy and Paul for their work throughout the day.

September 2 - Report

A lovely Father's Day afternoon saw a big field of entries start at the Speed Dome. A new course layout was run with a different start position, allowing for a smoother operation - and the course was very widely enjoyed by the drivers.

We had a very interesting mix of cars, spanning 1960 to 2007 model, and a good variety of cars among them. New to the event were several cars and drivers. Husband and wife team Betty and John Saunders brought up their recently purchased Toyota Sprinter from the south-west for the event and both drove well, with Betty beating John who had two garage penalties.

Victorian visitor Dev Raj drove Leslie Yin's Peugeot 306 Maxi, and convincingly beat the car's owner.

One new car which got a lot of attention on the day was Marc Drexel's Lancia Stratos recreation. Fitted with a Lancia twin-cam 2-litre engine, the impressively finished car proved a bit of a handful on its first time out, but showed that it will certainly be a potent vehicle once it's sorted. Marc achieved Spin of the Day.

A look at the results show a very impressive performance by Grant Stephenson driving his turbocharged 1981 Mazda RX7 - a win by a quarter of a century old 2-wheel drive car. Well driven! Vince Troth should be pretty pleased with his result in his recently purchased Fiat 131 too.  Congratulations to all the class winners.  And of course, thanks to the officials who helped out on the day.

August 5 -  Report

What a complete change from the miserable, wet weather of last month's Superkhana - a magnificent sunny day greeted competitors at the Midvale venue.

As usual there was a good variety of cars entered, with several new drives and a number of new cars driven by people who've been at the Speed Dome before. Vince Troth normally competes in his 1965 Renault 8 Gordini (and we've seen him out in his current model HSV once), but this Sunday we saw his newly acquired 1976 Fiat 131 Abarth replica performing. He was quite justifiably pleased with how the car went in its first event.

We hadn't seen Warwick Gates in an event for some time, but his appearance in a recently purchased  1997 Mazda MX5 race car showed us again what a skilled driver he is, achieving third fastest time overall, in a 1.8-litre normally aspirated car. Well done.

Andy Brown also put his newly purchased Evo 6.5 Tommi Makinen Edition to the test for the first time.

It was good to see the big V8 cars being so well driven, with Chris Caruso (Jaguar), Paul Lowry (Commodore VT) and Darren Weise (Torana) each impressing.

Spin of the day would have to be the excursion by Peter Marsh in the silver RX7 which saw his car stuck in slightly too deep wet grass. No damage done, but he was soundly beaten in the day's results by Greg Weryk sharing a drive in the same car.

Looking over the results you can see that it was Dave Kendall's day. It was clear to everyone watching that he was putting in some stonking quick drives, achieving fastest time on three of the four runs. Graeme Martin's Lotus was the only other fastest run winner, Graeme's spin on his final run taking him out of contention.

The results show some pretty close competition, and most people improving their results with each run.

Congratulations to all the winners and our thanks to all the officials for their help on the day.

July 1 - Report

Particularly wet and miserable weather was the most memorable feature of the July Superkhana. The new course layout was universally admired and many competitors commented they'd look forward to driving the course in the dry.

After canvassing competitors, the officials decided it prudent to close the event early due to the terrible weather.

Congratulations to the class winners and overall winners - well driven under difficult conditions.

The chart below shows results by fastest overall time. Times for Run 3 are shown, however these are not counted in the results as not all cars ran the third event.

Particular thanks to all the officials who were out in the weather in such atrocious conditions.

Class winners were:

Up to 1985 up to 2-litres - Keith Smith - 1976 Renault 12

Up to 1985 over 2-litres - Simon Lingford - 1973 Datsun 240Z

1986-2007 up to 2-litres - Piotr Zmigrodzki - 2000 Proton Satria

1986-2007 over 2-litres -  Rod Willis - 1990 Mazda MX5 Supercharged

February 4 - Report, Results & Photos

The motor sport year started well for the big group of competitors in the first Superkhana of the year. While Perth had been experiencing very hot weather, the day turned out to be fine, with a good breeze. As usual, we had an interesting mix of cars, as well as several new competitors in the field.  It was BMW 325i day with five drivers behind the wheels of these E30 models.

A changed course layout was used again, and officials reported positive comments from several competitors.

Congratulations to Jamie Lister for his winning drive - it's always good to watch someone controlling their car so well. Dave Eustace's MG Midget (with a turbo Nissan engine) was a potent performer and highest placed of the two-wheel drive cars. But probably most impressive was the consistently quick Peter Harper in the 1955 MG TF Roadster. OK, the car has very little TF left in it, with a lightweight body and modified MGB running gear - but a very impressive result nonetheless.

Other points of note - Spin of the Day would be Simon Ridgewell's neat spin, driving the same TF. Piotr Zmigrodski let his boss drive his Satria rally car, and face the question of who should be allowed to beat whom... It was great top see Chris Caruso's big Jaguar on course again, doing well as the largest car in the field on the day. Behnam Bordbar was trying out his newly acquired Porsche GT3 "completely different to the 911 and 964" he has campaigned previously.

And 3 Renaults in the field - it must be decades since that's happened in Perth. There was a time that the French marque featured in many a motor sport event in Australia - even winning the Australian Rally Championship.
