December 19th Last Blast Superkhana - Report, results, photos & YouTube links

We had a huge response to the Last Blast Superkhana, so we added an afternoon session and then filled that too. There was a fantastic mix of cars entered, a highlight which many competitors and spectators commentated favourably about.

Fortunately we didn't have the following day's wet weather - but enjoyed a warm, sunny day with a decent breeze. There was some brilliant driving throughout the day - as you'll see from the photos and YouTube links.  Take a look at - http://www.youtube.com/user/GEMWRC?feature=mhum Check back for more YouTube links shortly.

For once, a Subaru has knocked the Evo's from the top spot. Well done to Jamie Lister who put in some blistering laps - and to Robert Badivuk who is higher in the results than he's ever been in second, and Dennis Heller in third place. Great drives. Top of the 2WD drives was Steve Metlitzky (Lotus Elise), closely followed by Murray Armenti (Toyota MR2). Also very impressive was Julian O'Hara's drive of the unwieldy but thoroughly impressive Ford GT40 - to take 6th place outright.

While the 4WD turbos and mid-engined cars dominated the results, it is good to see Tsung Lee in the Honda Civic, Rodney Vance's TR8 and Neil Richardson's Swift (back after a 2-year break) mixing it successfully.

Highlight cars, as well as some of those mentioned above, included Lance Carwardine's wicked little Suzuki Hatch - with mid-mounted motorbike powerplant -  and Glen George's electric MG TF, which was eerily silent. Of course Chris Caruso's power-sliding V8 Jag was spectacular, and Paul Dodds' Triumph 2.5 PI did its final event with a 6-cylinder engine - can't wait to see it as a V8 next year.

A big thank you to our officials on the day - Brock Mann, Ian Mann, Natalie Blank, John Reid and Paul Cooper for a long day's work.

Check back soon for next years calendar.

August 22nd Porsche Superkhana - Report, Photos & Results

Perfect sunny weather greeted participants in this year's Porsche Club Superkhana. An excellent variety of models, competed, though it was a small field due to clashes with other events. Two different course layouts were run, with three runs at each - both courses were enjoyed by all drivers.  It was a relaxed afternoon which went without a hitch.  Fastest time went to Daniel Devries in his 1976 911 on his final run.  Well done to all drivers for clean runs throughout the day. Thanks to our officials on the day - Neville, Natalie, Ian, Brock, Martin & Paul.  Full results below.

August 8th Superkhana - Report, Photos & Results

A perfect, sunny day in the middle of winter greeted a full field of entries for our August Superkhana Day. We had unprecedented interest in this event, with the field full two weeks prior to the event and a waiting list for places should anyone have to withdraw.

We had a fantastic mix of cars - what other Australian event could you go to and see a Ford GT40 competing against a Fiat 500 and a Holden Gemini against a Maserati Karif? It's always so good to see such a variety of cars entered.

Franz Esterbauer crossed to the dark side - the Evo driver piloting a Subaru WRX for the day from Japanese Wholesale Spares - and proved he's a pretty mean pedaller behind the wheel of anything fast, taking out first place. Two seconds adrift in the total time taken was Bruce Hawley in his trusty Skyline GTR, followed by Steve Metlitzky's Lotus Elise a fraction behind.

Julian O'Hara showed great skill in handling his unwieldy but very impressive Ford GT40 replica, taking out 6th place, even with the car not running properly after a few runs. The flames from the exhaust pipes were impressive though!

It was great to see some of the girls who did our All-Girls event last month having a go too.

Thanks to our officials who helped run the day so smoothly.

Provisional results are below. In addition to the photos which appear here (copyright AEM), there are also photos available at:

June Superkhana - Report, Results & Photos

Great weather was a nice mid-winter surprise - and thoroughly enjoyed by all who entered our sold-out June Superkhana. We had probably the best mix of cars we've seen for a long time, as you'll see from our photos. Rarities included a Holden Gemini Gypsy van - how many of them would be left in existence? Italian cars were particularly well represented with a variety of Alfa Romeos including a rare 147 GTA, a stunning competition-prepared De Tomaso Pantera Group 4 and a beautiful Ferrari Dino 246GT.

It was great to see variety such as an early Mini, and AMG Mercedes SLK, a Torana, a pair of Escorts, several MGs, some early Skylines and a modern FPV Falcon in the mix. Among the other notable cars were a Mitsubishi FTO and a Lotus Elise.

A clutch problem saw Vince Troth's usually reliable Fiat 131 sidelined, and his everyday Subaru WRX entered in its place. And the result was certainly interesting, with Vince scoring second place outright, fractions behind the winner Dennis Heller, whose driving was very impressive indeed.

Tsung Lee will be pleased with his excellent result - third place and first of the 2WD cars. His Civic certainly looked quick on track. And it's great to see two of the oldest cars in the event make it into the top ten places.  Provisional results are shown below.

Thanks to our team of officials - Martin, Ian, Brock, Clive and Natalie for helping out on the day.

The next Superkhana date is August 8th.  Entries will open in a couple of weeks.

MG Car Club Superkhana - April 11 - Report, Results & Photos

We had a great turnout of cars for the first AEM MG Car Club event for the year. The Alfa Romeo Owners Club and Triumph Sports Owners Association had been invited and each fielded a few cars - and a look through the results and at the photos show how big a mix of cars enjoyed the day.

The first run on our new course (very widely enjoyed apparently) saw a few over-eager runs come to grief - nothing serious as all carried on to finish the day. But the sun shone and only one car didn't finish due to a breakdown.

Congratulations to Trevor Allen, winner on the day in his Triumph TR7 V8, who proved the old adage "there's no substitute for cubes", with the biggest engine on the day. An brief 'off' cost second place-getter, Dave Eustace (MG Midget turbo) a win.

Looking at the results, it's interesting to note that had Darren Weise (Torana) not had his spin and lost 15 seconds (ie: got a similar time to his other 3 runs), he would have won the day... but there are always a lot of 'if only' stories!

There were six different nakes of car among the top ten places. Well done to all for a great day's driving. And thanks to all who helped out on the day.

Don't forget the MG Car Club's next event with AEM is the exciting Motorplex day on November 7. But in the meantime, for two days of all-out competition fun, the Transcore Classic Challenge is just a few weeks away... places are still available. Click here for details.

Evo versus WRX Series event - April 11 - Report, Results & Photos

In the second season of the Evo versus WRX events, the Superkhana was the second of four different events planned during the year. There was an almost exactly even turnout from both groups this time. Of course, we saw some spectacular performances, and a few spins. Oddly, on the third run of the day garage penalties increased to a level we've never seen before...

It's good to see the cars at the top of the results included a pretty even mix of Evos and WRXs. Results were taken from the best 3 out of the 4 runs.

Thanks to all those who helped out on the day, and congratulations to the place-getters, whose trophies were awarded at the end of the day.

Dowerin Dirt Superkhana - February 28 - Report, Results & Photos

Our first event at Dowerin turned out to be exceptional... Feedback from competitors was overwhelmingly positive, about the venue, the courses and the infrastructure for the event. One competitor emailed as soon as he got home: "Had a great day today!! Real good fun, loved getting the car to hang out. Felt like I was a gun driver. Well done, great event, and thanks again to you and all the volunteers." At the end of the day the girlfriend of another said "He finished each course with a hugs smile on his face, unlike at some other events." Even the officials enjoyed it "I've never been to Dowerin before, and I'm quite impressed" said one.

There was a great atmosphere on the day, and the folks of Dowerin had set up food and drinks for us in the big, shady Scrutineering building.

The first course was set on a series of dirt roads, some of it compacted sand, which was very slippery. After a practice run, all the drivers handled it well. There were a few spins, no harm done, except to lap times... Fortunately the wind blew the dust away from the viewing area.

The second course was about half gravel, half bitumen, which provided its own interesting challenges, and was enjoyed just as much by all competitors.

Well done to Jim Grundy for his very smooth driving in his Brumby (full of WRX running gear) which earned him first place. Very close behind was Chris Caruso - not in his usual V8 Jaguar, but an AWD Mazda 323 Familia. And Franz Esterbauer will be pleased to have topped the rankings of the 2WD drivers.

Some of the results were skewed a bit by time-consuming spins, but that's part of the game...

Rarely have we had such an enthusiastically good response from competitors, so we'll definitely be back later in the year.

Thanks to the people of Dowerin, the Dowerin Car Club and the officials for assisting with this super successful event.

Pre-event information:

Here's a great new event at a brilliant venue. Yes, it's a 2-hour drive to get there, but we've arranged with the good folks at Dowerin to make use of their Field Days site which has extremely high quality dirt roads - with clear grass paddocks in between. We've laid out two different courses which will be tremendous fun in a safe environment. The Dowerin Car Club will be doing a sausage sizzle and drinks, so there's no need to bring refreshments. We've got a big shady building for Scrutineering and the Pits area.

Cars will compete in the following categories: (a) Pre 1980, (b) 1980-2000, (c) post 2000, (d) 4-wheel drive vehicles (all).

Here's a great opportunity to see how your car handles on a loose surface - and to see how well you can handle it too. A great fun learning opportunity. It is a very safe venue with the best dirt roads you could drive on. Simply put some masking tape on the back edges of your wheelarches and come on out and have some sliding fun! Off road tyres are not encouraged!

Interestingly the location we're using was used for racing in the 1930s and '40s. If it's a success, we'll run more events like it. Click on the Regulations and Entry form below. Remember to mark the date at the top of your entry form so we know which Superkhana you're entering.

OPEN SUPERKHANA - Sunday, February 14 - Report, Results & Photos

Warm weather greeted competitors in our first open Superkhana for the year - on Valentines Day, which kept a few people away. Nevertheless we had our usual great mix of cars entered. From a 1960 Austin Healey to a 2008 Commodore SS. It was good to see a pristine Datsun 1600 in action - in years gone by the staple car of all Australian motor sport, but almost extinct today. It was interesting to see a classic Gemini competing - the first in 18 years of AEM events - and very well driven too. In all, we had 15 brands of car competing.

As always, we witnessed some excellent driving. We had two courses, with two runs on each. Due to the smaller number of entries, we were able to run quite a long layout for the second course.

Congratulations to our winner and class winners. Exceptional smoothness, accuracy and speed is always a pleasure to watch. The result for the tope two places were very close. Well done too, to Warwick Gates for the top 2-wheel-drive placing, in his naturally aspirated MX5.

OUTRIGHT WINNER - Simon Gunson - 2003 Mitsubishi Evo8 RS

All up to 1985 up to 2000cc - John McIntosh - 1960 Austin Healey Sprite Mk1

1986-2010 up to 2000cc - Wawrick Gates - 1997 Mazda MX5

1966-1985 over 2000cc - George Cameron - 1981 Triumph TR7 V8

1986-2010 over 2000cc - Steve Metlitzky - 2004 Lotus Elise S/C

AWD Turbo - Simon Gunson - 2003 Mitsubishi Evo8 RS

Full results below.

Don't forget to get your entries in for our upcoming events, the Dowerin Superkhana (Feb 28th) and Transcore Classic Challenge (March 6-7).

Thanks to our officials, Ian, Martin, Natalie and Brock for their assistance on the day. It all ran smoothly and was finished exactly on our estimated time.

Our first open Superkhana for the year - it's an afternoon session. Open to all cars, this is the first of our series during 2010. To spice things up a bit, we will be running two layouts, with two runs on each course. Always a lot of fun and as well suited to first timers as experts. If you haven't competed here before, see below for reports, photos and results from Superkhanas last year. And we've kept the price the same for 2010.

Refreshments available on site. Free spectator entry. Good, shady spectator area. Hopefully if it's a warm day we'll get the sea breeze early. Click on the Regulations and Entry form below. Remember to mark the date at the top of your entry form so we know which Superkhana you're entering.

ITALIAN CAR SUPERKHANA - Sunday, February 7 2010 - Report, Results & Photos

After a bit of pressure from some of the car clubs we ended up with an excellent turnout of Italian cars for the third Italian Car Superkhana Day. Ferrari, Fiat, Lancia, Alfa Romeo and Maserati were represented this year, with cars spanning four decades.

A new course for this year proved a good challenge and received many positive comments. With only one wrong way and two traffic cones hit all day, the course was enjoyed by all, and many newcomers were amongst the participants.

John Trowell celebrated his 80th birthday by competing in his Alfa Romeo GTV. The most talked about cars were: the spectacular little Fiat 500 which Luca Giorgella and Mario Monachino entered. Recently arrived from Italy, this little monster featured a 1.7-litre Alfa 33 engine, mid-mounted and sporting a supercharger. The central driving position is pretty special too. Paul Odden's beautiful 246GT Dino was centre of attention. He's owned the car for 32 years.

And the dramatic looking Fiat X1-9 racing car of Gordon Mitchell was a real talking point on the day too. The lineup of other Italian cars in the carpark throughout the day gave us plenty of interest to see too.

Thanks also to the drivers of the 'other' makes who supported the day (most of whom are ex-Italian car owners), and to the officials who generously gave their time - also mostly ex or current Italian car owners, as it happens... With the successful raffle helping, we will be able to present a decent cheque to Northbridge Rotary at the Italian Car Day on February 21st at Mulberry on Swan.

Congratulations to the winning drivers.

Outright winner - Vince Troth - 1976 Fiat 131 Abarth replica

Second place - Simon Lingford - 1987 Ferrari 328 GTS

Third place - Lance Carwardine - 1990 Lancia Delta Integrale

Class winners:

Alfa Romeo - Andrew Murray - 1969 Alfa Romeo 105 GT

    Fiat/Lancia - Vince Troth - 1976 Fiat 131 Abarth replica

    Ferrari/Maserati - Simon Lingford - 1987 Ferrari 328 GTS

Great to see three different makes in the top three places. And Cindy Troth, sharing the Fiat 131 with husband Vince, drove exceptionally well. Her first event ever had been the weekend before at the All-Girls Superkhana. Twelfth place, beating a lot of the boys is a pretty impressive result! And how close were Luca and Mario's results in the monster Bambino they both drove? And, interestingly, Alex and Sal' sharing the Alfasud were also very close in the results.

Thanks to the Alfa Romeo Owners Club, Fiat Lancia Club and Ferrari Club Australia for their participation. One club was pleased to have gained two new members on the day. Paul Blank, AEM principal said afterwards "The day had a lovely, friendly atmosphere, and it was wonderful to see such a mix of cars participating. As a keen Italian car enthusiast - I'm a committee member and ex-President of the Ferrari Club, Honorary Life member of the Fiat Lancia Club and Honorary member of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club, I'm very proud to be able to put this event together with the support of the clubs. We will have a record figure to present at the All Italian Car Day of funds raised today."

PRE-EVENT INFORMATION: Charity fun Superkhana

Come and join in the fun of a Superkhana day exclusively for Italian cars. Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Lancia, De Tomaso, Maserati, Abarth, Lamborghini and others are welcome, new or old. Early entries include examples of Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Ferrari.

All proceeds from the day go to fund raising in conjunction with the All Italian Car, Bike & Scooter Day to be held on February 21st at Mulberry on Swan. Run with support of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club, Fiat Lancia Club and Ferrari Club Australia. This event is a part of the Fiat Lancia Club Championship.

All Italian cars are welcome to join in, and you don’t have to be a member of a car club.

Scrutineering starts at 8.30am, with the first car underway ay 9.30am. The event will finish around lunchtime. Spectator access is free. The venue is the excellent Speed Dome on Eddie Barron Drive, Midvale. Refreshments available on site.

Automotive Events Management has successfully conducted events here for several years, and for last two years has held the Italian Car Superkhana at the Speed Dome. Superkhanas are ideal for first timers, trying out their cars in motor sport for the first time, yet provide an exciting challenge for the most experienced drivers.

What you need to participate:
1. An Entry Form needs to be completed and sent to Automotive Events Management.
2. The entry fee is $65 including GST, to be sent with the Entry Form.
3. You need a competition license from either AASA or CAMS. AEM can issue AASA Licenses on the day, which are a 12-month license, costing $50 (can be done on the day).
4. You need a good quality helmet, and to wear long-sleeved clothing when competing.
5. Your car needs to be in good, roadworthy condition (it does not have to be licensed), and will be checked over at Scrutineering prior to the event.
