December 18 - The Last Blast Superkhana
A great day at the Speed Dome saw full fields for both morning and afternoon sessions. As always, there was a wonderful mix of cars competing. There can't be many events where a Triumph Herald goes head to head with a V8 Commodore Ute! Great to see eighteen different marques participating.
Hard luck award has to go to George Stanley, driving his lovely restored 1968 Mini. On his second run he got a flat tyre - went home to fix it and arrived back just as the last car finished. He went to have his last two runs, and first lap out got another flat tyre! And they were brand new tyres. Not to be discouraged, the Superkhana first-timer says he's hooked and will be back again.
There was some spectacular driving during the day - not all of it accurate, but some certainly was. A record 7 cone penalty was achieved by a certain white Commodore ute... Congratulations to our winners - extremely well driven runs against tough competition.
Entries are open for our January 29th Superkhana. Again, we'll be using a long-course layout, with morning and afternoon sessions. Note the start time is 30-minutes later. An innovation is that results will be calculated on the best 3 out of 4 runs. Be sure to get your entry in early so you don't miss out - these events are strictly limited to 25 cars per session and do sell out.

November 6 - Long-Course Superkhana


In spite of dire weather predictions we struck lucky and had a dry day for our November long-course Superkhana.
Even with our limit of 25 cars for a Long-Course event, we got our usual fantastic variety of cars entered, with 14 different marques represented, spanning 1964 to 2010. Unusually we had very few all-wheel-drive cars entered.
There was plenty of great driving witnessed - a couple of harmless spins and some excellent car control. Very entertaining - and the usual friendly atmosphere among all the competitors and spectators.
David Glover continued his success after the MG Car Club Motorplex Day we ran, taking out first place again - well done. Jurgen Lunsmann has clearly got the hang of his hot new Suzuki, coming second on the day. Bob Schrader proved the age of yiour car isn't necessarily a handicap, bringing the oldest car in the event home in third place. Congratulations to all.
A big thank you to our team of officials on the day - Helen, Rubin, Ian, Martin and Tim.

Entries are now open for our Last Blast Superkhana (on December 18th). It will also be a Long-Course, with separate morning and afternoon sessions and a limit of 25 cars per session. A great opportunity to blow out the cobwebs before Perth shuts down for the holidays...

October 30 - MG Car Club Motorplex Day
A great day was enjoyed by a full field of entrants at this year's event. An excellent mix of cars was among the entrants. A few cars succumbed to mechanical woes, including Tony Lucente's turbocharged Fiat 124 racing car, which we were all looking forward to seeing perform on the drag strip... August 28 - WRX Club Superkhana
Perfect sunny weather greeted participants for the WRX Club's Long-Course Superkhana. Their cars, and those of invited guests performed very well throughout the event, though there was a high number of garage penalites. There were no wrong ways and only one car spun in an event widely enjoyed by all drivers. Congratulations to Steve Metlitzky whose newly supercharged Lotus performed extremely well, to take first place outright. Steve Pummer in his well-sorted WRX STi came in second. Well done to all, and thanks to the officials who helped out on the day. Results are posted below.

July 31 - New Long-Course Superkhana


A new format was trialed at our first Long-Course Superkhana which saw a large number of entries, sufficient to have morning and afternoon sessions, given that we limited the number of entries to smaller groups.
The middle of winter always runs the risk of a wet event, and whilst we're often very lucky, the clouds opened up a couple of times. Nonetheless most runs were done in the dry in both sessions, and we saw some impressive drives and car control. We only had a few spins and one car go far enough off the track to need towing out - but it drove back to the pits - a little mud spattered. Thanks to the Jeep driver Tony Henry who kindly towed the car out.
We had 21 different brands of car represented in the field. As you can see below, we had everything from a 1954 Standard 10 to a brand new Alfa Romeo Giulietta entered in our inaugural Long-Course Superkhana.
Interesting to see that two front wheel drive cars headed the results - well done! Congratulations to Tsung Lee for his second outright win at the Speed Dome. Glen Renshaw did well in the big Holden Ute to come top of the rear wheel drives too. Scott Allen seems to have got things together in his Subaru Liberty, posting a best yet result. And well done Sharon Payne, from the GTI Girls team - 7th place.

July 3 Superkhana
We were very lucky to have a sunny morning for our first winter Superkhana, following several days of rain. For the first run the track was still damp from early morning rain, but a dry line developed quickly and by the second run the track was quite dry.
And we also enjoyed a brilliant variety of cars entered - 22 different makes in all. Where can you see or be in an event with cars as diverse as a Hillman Hunter, supercharged Lotus Elise, mid-engined Fiat 500 competition car, BMW M3, Porsche 911, Alfa Romeo 75, Mitsubishi EvoX, V8 Triumph sedan and a Bugeye Sprite?
There was some exceptional driving - even though there were some slight 'offs' onto the grass - most notably when Mario Monachino got the little Fiat stuck in the grass - which a small push from the officials overcame.
A big thank you to our officials - Natalie, Martin, Ian and Brock.
Results are now shown below. Congratulations to Robert Badivuk for his outright win. Among notable results are 5th place to Lance Carwardine in his mid-engined Suzuki Hatch and Paul Dodd, who brought his Triumph sedan to 6th place on its maiden voyage with a V8 engine installed. Steve Metlitzky will be pleased with 4th place given that his car was running badly due to a mystery electrical gremlin. And a herculean effort by Tsung lee in his front wheel drive Honda Civic to take out second place. Well done all.

GaragePro Superkhana April 10 2011- Report, Results & Photos



A special invitation event, the GaragePro Superkhana attracted an interesting mix of vehicles. The bulk of the cars were various models of Lotus - Elises of all types, Esprit Turbos, Europa S, plus a trio of Lancia Delta Integrales, some French hatchbacks - Renault, Peugeot and Citroen, plus a BMW 335i and a Porsche GT3. The Citroen was probably the first ever diesel vehicle to compete at the Speed Dome "It's very different to drive to the WRX STi". said Denis Conway of his usual competition car "and probably a couple of hundred horsepower down."
It was great to see some of the classic Lancia Integrales on the track. Matt Venetis brought out his ultra rare Integrale which is from the very last batch made. The Lotus Europa S of Paul Medcraft is a very rare beast too.
The day began with a driver training period where all participants had some on-track training. Many of the competitors were first-timers, so the advice was well taken. A big thank you to the instructors. And also to the team of volunteer officials on the day.
Graeme Martin put in some blinding laps in his early Elise, with some tail-out driving as he exited some of the corners. The brutal black Porsche GT3 of Daren Deen was obviously a handful, but sounded great as the exhaust blatted on the exit of corners.

MG CAR CLUB SUPERKHANA March 6th - Report, Results & Photos

The 1955 MG TF which Allan Newton bought 44 years ago put up a good showing - as did the electric converted version of the same model which Glen George entered. The MGs covered most models including an Rv8 and modern mid-engine models.
There was a good mix of non MGs entered as well, spanning clubmans to a modified Standard 10 to a Lotus Elise. Paul Odden's lovely Ferrari Dino 246GT created a lot of interest, as well it should.
There were some car which suffered mechanical issues - unusual for such a day - one broken axle, a core plug blown out and a clutch suffering... all on MGs.
The course included a new loop at the southern-most corner which seemed to have good support from the drivers, putting a completely new complexion on a corner often used in Superkhanas at this venue.
Andrew Murray drove very cleanly in his Lotus Elise to claim his first ourtight placing in a Superkhana. Vince Troth took out second place (with his cousin sharing the car, visiting from the UK taking 7th in his first Superkhana). The turbocharged Clubman of David Glover took third while Paul Blank competing in his first ever Superkhana came fourth. First of the MGs was Bob Schrader in fifth place, narrowly ahead of Rami Brass - both in early MGB Roadsters. Congratulations to the place-getters and thanks to the officials who helped out on the day.

DOWERIN DIRT SUPERKHANA February 20th - Report, Results & Photos

We had a fantastic day at Dowerin, with a very interesting cross-section of cars entered spanning a Hillman Imp to a Mitsubishi Evo. The Armenti family proudly debuted their latest competition car, a 'sturdy' Volvo 360GLT, which featured some spectacular decorations - see the photos below. And the O'Hara/Stean entry of a $250 Toyota Corona performed beyond expectations... The weather was kind to us, with an overcast day. The smooth dirt surfaces (they vary depending on each 'street') proved grippy in some areas and quite slippery in others. Nonetheless the two courses worked very well, with some opportunities to explore the handling of cars and limits of driving skill.
It was all tremendous fun, with lots of positive comments from competitors throughout the day and afterwards. A highlight was when Mr Whippy turned up - no not a description of someone's driving style, but an ice cream van. The townfolk of Dowerin pitched in with food and drinks and the mobile grandstand was full all day. Our thanks to the Shire and the Dowerin Car Club for their assistance with putting the event together and making the visitors all feel welcome.
Andrew Mawson drove exceptionally well - and without the aid of knobbly tyres managed to take out the top spot. Graeme Morey, sharing Andrew's car also drove really well, considering his lack of experience in the car. Several girls entered. Natalie Blank drove her first event in a manual car. and first event in the supercharged Mazda - and even managed a couple of spins. Sharon Payne drove fast until her car was sidelined. Some racetracks have a corner named "Hell Corner" - well, now Dowerin's course has "Helen's Corner". And the little Volvo also dislodged a street sign on its last lap...
Another of the 'novice' drivers, Joshua Armenti (Murray's son) drove the Volvo with gusto and displayed considerable skill. Seems like he'd previously been in the passenger seat of a car going sideways rather a lot. Well done. There can be little doubt that the ABBA tape playing in the cassette player would have helped.
Russell Speak's big Rover went surprisingly well for a big car not usually connected to dirt driving. And local boy Jason Pickering entered his Falcont ute and drove like he uses dirt roads every day.... maybe he does, but it was impressive watching him lap the courses. The Datsun rally car entered by father and son Les and Shane Eather also impressed with sideways action all day. And having won its class in the MG Car Club Concours d'Elegance the previous day, James Saint's well-driven Midget was not quite so clean by the day's end.

It looks likely that we'll be holding another Dirt Superkhana at Dowerin on the Theos' Run weekend on April 16th - details will be advised soon.

SUPERKHANA & ALL-GIRLS EVENT February 6 - Report, Results & Photos
A windy but fine morning greeted a big field of competitors at our first Superkhana for the year. The event was combined with an All-Girls Motorsport event, which saw a driver training session take place prior. We had a great field again, with an eclectic mix of cars entered - spanning a 1954 Standard 10 (which isn't quite standard...), through a good mix of 1970s cars to several Lotuses and some pretty potent AWD turbo cars. 20 different makes of car in all.
A big thank you to the team of instructors - Steve Metlitzky, Franz Esterbauer, John Fowler, Denis Conway, Bruce Robins, Vince Troth and Jurgen Lunsmann. The feedback from the girls was enthusiastic and positive. It was clear to see a great deal of improvement from some of the drivers, and incremental improvement in the others.
Also, thanks to the team running the day, Ian Mann, Linda Bailie, Paul Cooper, Leanne Doust, Andy Hamilton and Natalie Blank.

First place getter was Franz Esterbauer, closely followed by Robert Badivuk, both in Mitsubishi Evos. Neatly splitting them and the next pair of Evo drivers was Steve Metlitzky in his supercharged Lotus Elise. Well done to all. A very impressive result was posted by the highest placed of the girls - Shannon Dittmer, who got 12th place outright. Excellent! Results are below, with the girls results shown separately.

"Another great day! Thanks for all your effort in putting it together.
I really enjoyed myself, especially when I remembered that my car had brakes and I stopped driving like, dare I say it, a girlie girl!
I think my times improved by about four seconds over the course of the day. That is enough to make anyone happy.
It has only taken three outings, but I now get what the instructors are saying when they talk about "driving lines".
I can actually see the lines and looking back at some video footage taken by a spectator, I can see where and when I was trying to put the car on the track to set myself up for entry into corner A so that I could exit corner B really fast."
